🌤 During summer, swimming is a popular way to cool down. However, many people experience red, irritated eyes and excessive tearing after swimming. These may be signs of “Swimmer’s Eye” – a common condition caused by exposure to pool water without proper eye protection.

So, what exactly is “Swimmer’s Eye,” and how can you prevent it effectively? Let CarePlus guide you through the details below.

1️⃣ What is “Swimmer’s Eye”?

“Swimmer’s Eye,” also known as chemical conjunctivitis, is a common, non-contagious eye condition associated with swimming. It occurs when the eyes are directly exposed to chemicals in pool water, especially chlorine, which can disrupt the tear film – the eye’s natural protective and moisturizing layer.

Common symptoms include:

🔸 Red eyes

🔸 Stinging or burning sensation

🔸 Light sensitivity

🔸 Excessive tearing

👉 If these symptoms persist for more than 1–2 days, or if you experience significant pain, discharge, or vision changes, you should consult an ophthalmologist at CarePlus for proper diagnosis and treatment guidance.

2️⃣ How to prevent “Swimmer’s Eye” when swimming in summer

Not everyone who swims will develop “Swimmer’s Eye.” The key is proper eye protection. You can significantly reduce your risk by following these simple habits:

✔ Always wear swimming goggles

✔ Avoid wearing contact lenses while swimming

✔ Use artificial tears before and after swimming

✔ Stay well hydrated

✔ Rinse your eyes with saline solution after swimming

At CarePlus, our Ophthalmology Department brings together experienced and dedicated doctors, supported by modern medical equipment, to provide comprehensive eye care, screening, and monitoring services.

Don’t let minor eye discomfort ruin your summer experience.

👉 If you are experiencing any eye concerns, let CarePlus accompany you in protecting and caring for your vision safely and effectively.
