SWOLLEN GUMS: A WARNING SIGN YOU SHOULDN'T IGNORE

Swollen gums may be a warning sign of an underlying dental condition. Join CarePlus doctors as they explore the causes, symptoms, and the right time to see a doctor in the article below.

SWOLLEN GUMS: A WARNING SIGN YOU SHOULDN'T IGNORE

Red and swollen gums that feel slightly sore when brushing are a fairly common occurrence - but they can also be your body's way of "speaking up," urging you to pay closer attention to your oral health.
👉 So what conditions could be hiding behind this symptom? Join Dr. Hua Minh Tuyet - Dental Specialist at CarePlus - as we explore this topic in the article below.

1️⃣ What Is Gum Swelling? Recognizing It Early to Protect Your Oral Health
❗ Gum swelling occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth becomes inflamed, causing the gums to shift from a pale pink to a red color, become puffy, or feel painful to the touch. Some people may also experience bleeding while brushing, bad breath, or discomfort while eating or drinking.
In the early stages, symptoms are often mild and easy to overlook. However, if the inflammation persists, patients may experience increased pain, which can affect eating, communication, as well as focus at work and in daily life.

2️⃣ Dental Conditions That May Be "Hiding" Behind Swollen Gums
🔶 Gingivitis
This is the most common cause of gum swelling. It occurs when plaque and bacteria build up around the tooth roots, causing the gums to become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding when brushing or flossing.
🔶 Periodontitis
If gingivitis is not brought under control in time, the inflammation can spread deeper into the tissues that support the teeth, leading to periodontitis. Patients may experience symptoms such as receding gums, bad breath, loose teeth, and more.
🔶 Dental Abscess
This is an infection in which pockets of pus form beneath the tooth root area, causing the surrounding gum to become swollen along with intense, throbbing pain.
🔶 Wisdom Tooth Eruption
When a wisdom tooth fails to fully emerge, part of the tooth's crown may break through the surface while the rest remains covered by gum tissue - a condition known as an operculum (gum flap). The gap between the operculum and the tooth's chewing surface easily traps food particles and accumulates plaque and bacteria, making it prone to inflammation.

3️⃣ When Should You See a Doctor?
If you experience any of the following signs, you should visit a Dentistry (Odonto-Stomatology) doctor right away:
▪️ Gum swelling that persists for more than a few days without improvement.
▪️ Frequent bleeding from the gums.
▪️ Presence of pus or abnormal discharge around the gums.
▪️ Significant pain that affects eating or daily activities.
▪️ Loose teeth or persistent bad breath.
A dental examination helps identify the exact cause of gum swelling, allowing for an appropriate treatment plan to be developed - one that minimizes complications and helps preserve your natural teeth.
