1. Mothers think that their children don’t need Flu (Influenza) vaccination because even after being vaccinated, children still get the cold?

It is misunderstood that Colds and Flu are the same because both are caused by viruses and have many common symptoms in the upper respiratory tract such as sneezing, runny, stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, fever, body aches, pains, etc. In addition, people often call colds flu.

However, these are two completely different diseases. Colds usually clear up on their own without specific treatment and have few serious complications. While Flu has a high risk of serious respiratory complications such as pneumonia, multi-organ failure, which can be fatal and create a dangerous epidemic for the community.

Therefore, Flu vaccination does not aim not to catch a cold but to prevent the flu and its serious complications. So even if you have been vaccinated against the flu, you can still get colds or viral nasopharyngitis, but will not have serious and dangerous flu complications.

2. Do only children get the flu virus and adults do not?

Many people think that only children get the flu virus and adults do not. This is a misconception. Anyone can be attacked by the flu virus. In particular, adults who work in the office environment are at the second-highest risk of getting the influenza virus after the hospital environment.

In developed countries and some foreign companies in Vietnam, the health care regime for employees is a free annual flu shot, because they understand and are extremely afraid of flu. Influenza causes loss of working days, flu spreads to the whole company and flu is quite common every year. Likewise, the majority of pre-school children who get the flu are transmitted by their parents and caregivers. In addition, when having the flu, parents will not be strong enough to be able to take care of the children.

3. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not get the flu vaccine?

Pregnant women are considered to be at high risk of getting the flu and are more likely to develop a severe illness with the flu. The flu vaccine is made from an inactivated virus so it is safe for both mother and baby during pregnancy. It is recommended that pregnant women get the flu vaccine during pregnancy in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Breastfeeding women has no reason not to get a flu vaccine.
