IS IT SAFE TO LOSE WEIGHT TOO QUICKLY?

9/10/2024 8:49:30 AM

⚡"Losing 2kg in 1 week," "regain a slim waist in just 15 days"... These are the kinds of rapid weight loss that you often see on social media. Many of us seek effective and rapid weight loss solutions. However, experts caution against rapid weight loss methods, as they can lead to some health problems.

👉 Join CarePlus to explore the health risks associated with rapid weight loss in the article below.

1/ Current popular rapid weight loss methods

Most rapid weight loss strategies typically fit into these categories:

🔸 Starvation diet - a plan promotes fasting and severely severely limits what foods you can eat.

🔸 Diet pills and supplements: These products often claim to inhibit nutrient absorption, boost metabolism, or facilitate fat burning.

🔸 Very low-calorie diets (VLCDs): VLCDs are often used before weight loss surgery and under the guidance of a doctor.

2/ Does rapid weight loss work?

In any rapid weight loss method, the real fat-burning factor is not any particular pill or food type. It involves significantly reducing calorie intake, combined with exercise. But can you sustain these deprivation diets long-term? And if you've successfully lost weight, will the weight stay off when you return to normal eating habits?

❗ It's worth noting that rapid weight loss regimes can only temporarily achieve desired weight, rather than sustainable and healthy results. Most people quickly regain weight when they stop dieting.

3/ Risks of rapid weight loss

💡 Just like a car requires the correct fuel to make it run, the body needs a balanced diet to grow and function optimally. This entails consuming adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fats, and essential nutrients.

⛔ When you go on a fad diet and exclude necessary nutrients, you're putting yourself at risk for becoming ill. Insufficient intake of any nutrient may not lead to immediate issues, but prolonged deficiency can result in various health problems. Including:

🔹 Gallstones (which occur in 12%-25% of individuals undergoing substantial weight loss over several months);

🔹 Dehydration (can be prevented by consuming adequate fluids);

🔹 Malnutrition (typically arises from insufficient protein intake for weeks at a time;

🔹 Electrolyte imbalances (which can sometimes be life-threatening).

Additional side effects of rapid weight loss may include headaches, irritability, fatigue, dizziness, constipation, menstrual irregularities, hair loss, and muscle loss.

👉 It's really hard to resist the allure of "rapid weight loss tips". However, if applied over a long period, they can cause many harms such as slowing down metabolism, nutrient deficiencies, and muscle loss.

✅ It's important to consult a doctor before starting a weight loss plan, especially for those using prescription medications or with medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, kidney conditions, liver conditions, food allergies, hypertension, heart disease, thyroid conditions, depression, ...

 For safe, effective, and sustainable weight loss, seek advice from an experienced Nutritioal Doctor at CarePlus to receive accurate guidance on your ideal weight and appropriate diet and exercise regimen.
