ESSENTIAL VACCINES BEFORE ENTERING GRADE 1

ESSENTIAL VACCINES BEFORE ENTERING GRADE 1

Reviewed by Dr. Tran Thi Tu Hang – Pediatric Specialist (Level 1).

As children prepare to start Grade 1, their immune systems are at a critical developmental stage. Many vaccines administered in early childhood may no longer offer full protection due to waning immunity over time.

At school, frequent contact and crowded environments increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks. Without timely and complete immunization, children face higher risks of illness, complications, and negative impacts on their health, learning, and development.

✳️ RECOMMENDED VACCINES AND BOOSTERS BEFORE GRADE 1

1.  INFLUENZA VACCINE
Why: Flu viruses mutate rapidly and cause highly contagious seasonal outbreaks. Vaccines from previous years may not protect against new strains. WHO and CDC update flu vaccine compositions annually.
Recommendation: An annual flu shot helps maintain strong protection against new virus strains.

2. MEASLES – MUMPS – RUBELLA (MMR)
Why: The first MMR dose is typically given at 12–15 months. Antibody levels may decline over time, especially if the immune response was incomplete.
Recommendation: A second dose at 4–6 years is crucial to boost antibody levels, strengthen immune memory, and ensure long-term protection.

3. VARICELLA (CHICKENPOX)
Why: The first dose (usually at 12–15 months) provides effective immunity for only 80–85% of children. In schools, chickenpox spreads easily—with up to 90% transmission upon close contact.
Recommendation: A second dose at 4–6 years increases immunity to 98–99%, helping prevent outbreaks.

4. DIPHTHERIA – PERTUSSIS – TETANUS – POLIO (DTaP-IPV)
Why: Although the primary series is given before age 2, immunity may wane after 3–5 years.
Recommendation: A booster at 4–6 years helps maintain long-lasting protection.

❓ WHY ARE TIMELY BOOSTER SHOTS IMPORTANT?

Each vaccine offers protection for a limited time. On-time boosters help to:

  • Reactivate the immune system and build strong antibody levels

  • Prevent infections and reduce complications in school settings

  • Protect against severe outcomes like encephalitis, pneumonia, paralysis, hearing loss, and infertility

❗ RISKS OF DELAYED OR MISSED VACCINATION

  • Inadequate protection due to low antibody levels

  • Loss of active immunity

  • Higher risk of spreading disease within the community

✅ ADVICE FROM DR. TRAN THI TU HANG, PEDIATRIC SPECIALIST
