SPONDYLOLISTHESIS AND DISC HERNIATION IN YOUNG ADULTS – HIDDEN RISKS AND THE DIAGNOSTIC POWER OF MRI

5/6/2025 2:44:18 PM

Spondylolisthesis and herniated discs have long been considered conditions primarily affecting the elderly. However, in recent years, a growing number of young individuals have been diagnosed with these issues, often due to sedentary lifestyles, poor posture, heavy lifting, or sports injuries. If not detected and treated promptly, these conditions can lead to chronic pain, numbness or weakness in the limbs, and potentially long-term mobility impairment.

MRI is an advanced imaging modality that enables early detection of spondylolisthesis and herniated discs, offering a precise assessment of the extent of damage without the need for invasive procedures.

CLINICAL CASE: 30-YEAR-OLD OFFICE WORKER SURPRISED BY DIAGNOSIS OF SPONDYLOLISTHESIS AND HERNIATED DISC

Mr. S (30 years old, an office employee in Ho Chi Minh City) visited CarePlus due to persistent lower back pain lasting more than a year, particularly in the lumbar region. The pain worsened with prolonged sitting, standing, or bending. More recently, he experienced numbness radiating down both legs and occasional sharp pain during intense movement.

Initially, he assumed the discomfort stemmed from prolonged sitting and physical inactivity. However, as the pain intensified and began affecting his daily activities and work, he decided to seek professional evaluation at CarePlus.

MRI RESULTS:

L5/S1 Level: Anterior displacement of the L5 vertebra accompanied by disc bulging, narrowing of the lower intervertebral foramina bilaterally, compressing the L5 nerve roots on both sides. The anteroposterior diameter of the spinal canal measured approximately 10.6 mm.

Following an accurate diagnosis, Mr. S was advised to undergo a conservative treatment plan involving physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and the use of muscle relaxants and pain relief medication. After one month of treatment, his back pain significantly improved, allowing for more flexible movement without the need for analgesics.

MRI – THE GOLD STANDARD FOR DIAGNOSING SPONDYLOLISTHESIS & HERNIATED DISC

Previously, X-rays were commonly used to detect spondylolisthesis. However, this method can only assess bone displacement and does not provide insight into soft tissue damage such as disc herniation, ligament tears, or nerve root compression. In contrast, MRI offers high-resolution imaging that comprehensively reveals bone structures, intervertebral discs, and neural tissues, enabling earlier and more accurate diagnoses.

BENEFITS OF MRI IN DIAGNOSING SPONDYLOLISTHESIS & HERNIATED DISC

✅ Precisely identifies the location and severity of vertebral slippage, including assessment of spinal instability.
✅ Provides a comprehensive view of disc damage, herniation, and the extent of nerve compression.
✅ Evaluates spinal canal narrowing, joint inflammation, and ligament injuries—common conditions associated with spondylolisthesis.
✅ Non-invasive, radiation-free, and safe for young individuals and those requiring long-term monitoring.

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER A SPINAL MRI?

You should consider undergoing an MRI if you experience any of the following symptoms:

🔹 Persistent back pain lasting more than 3 months, especially if worsened by prolonged sitting, standing, or physical activity.
🔹 Radiating leg pain, numbness, or muscle weakness, particularly noticeable when walking or standing up from a seated position.
🔹 Morning stiffness or discomfort after sitting for extended periods.
🔹 A history of trauma or participation in high-intensity sports.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE BACK PAIN – EARLY EXAMINATION CAN PREVENT SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS

If left undiagnosed and untreated, spondylolisthesis and herniated discs can lead to chronic back pain, muscle atrophy, limited mobility, and in severe cases, paralysis. MRI enables early detection, allowing for appropriate treatment planning and helping to avoid unnecessary surgical interventions.
