POSTERIOR THIGH PAIN? BEWARE OF A HAMSTRING TEAR

Posterior thigh pain during movement is often mistaken for a mild strain. However, it could be a sign of a hamstring tear. Learn how to recognize and treat it properly with CarePlus doctors in the article below.

POSTERIOR THIGH PAIN? BEWARE OF A HAMSTRING TEAR

💥 Have you ever felt pain in the back of your thigh while sprinting, or experienced tightness after bending forward? It may seem to improve after a few days of rest… but the pain returns once you resume activity?

Many people assume this is just a “mild muscle strain.” In reality, it could be a sign of a hamstring tear (posterior thigh muscle injury)-a condition that is often underestimated or misdiagnosed.

✅ Join MSc. MD. Nguyen Van Hoang Tam – Specialist in Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Musculoskeletal Medicine at CarePlus as we explore how to properly recognize and treat a hamstring tear in the article below.

1️⃣ Why can a hamstring tear occur even without direct impact?

A hamstring tear occurs when the muscle fibers in the posterior thigh are overstretched, resulting in a partial or complete tear. This injury commonly occurs during running, jumping, exercise, or sports activities.

Even without any direct impact, a tear can happen when you:

🔸 Accelerate suddenly

🔸 Change direction quickly

🔸 Kick forcefully

In these situations, the muscle is simultaneously lengthened and contracted, exceeding its load-bearing capacity and leading to tearing.

What makes this injury particularly concerning is that you may still be able to walk, making it seem minor-while the muscle is already damaged internally. Continuing to stay active can cause a small tear to worsen into a more severe one.

👉 The more you underestimate this injury, the longer your recovery time will be.

2️⃣ Warning signs of a hamstring tear you should not ignore

If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, it is likely not just a simple muscle strain, but a hamstring tear:

▪️ Sharp pain in the back of the thigh during movement

▪️ A feeling of weakness when running or climbing stairs

▪️ Pain may subside, but you hesitate to accelerate

▪️ Recurrent pain at the same location

If the pain persists for 5–7 days without improvement, or if the pain decreases but you still lack confidence in movement, or if it keeps recurring-then the issue is no longer just pain, but improper recovery.

📌 At this point, you should consult a specialist for a thorough examination and accurate assessment of the stage of your hamstring injury.
